You know what K.I.S.S. stands for? Keep it simple so they can stay stupid.
- Dr. Cheryl Hardison Dayton

I recall my mentor writing the acronym K.I.S.S. on a chalkboard as I sat in my Women in History course. She explained to us how our distractions as college students with all things media was keeping us dumbed down. How we’d been so preoccupied with whatever the hell it meant to be Black in college that we were fitting into every negative stereotype that had been set before us. I had no idea that her words would have such a lasting impression on me, or that she wouldn’t be around to reiterate them much longer.

I consider myself one of the last generations of individuals who use to play outside or spent more time outside than in doors. In my generation, we had latch key kids, and all that jazz. However, we still had more important things to do and more adventures to take part in than sitting in front of the television nonstop. What can be said now for a generation of children who have seemingly everything and yet are so desensitized and completely dependent upon media? From social networks to that dastardly FOX news station. Is there any hope for them?

The term propaganda according to the American heritage dictionary means “Official government communications to the public that are designed to influence opinion. The information may be true or false, but it is always carefully selected for its political effect.” Given the current state of American politics every ounce of propaganda that can be used on the American public to justify damn near everything is being used. Fear is being instilled in the masses through numerous networks and media outlets. Thus those who use these outlets as a sole source of information often times aren’t getting proper information or are getting extremely biased and skewed information. They give us extremely selective sources as “reliable sources”, partial factors, and even selective stories to back up these partial factors. It’s like looking at the world through one huge filtered lens. The propaganda fed to all of us has encouraged war, hatred, bigotry etc. and has done so for numerous years. We’ve been fed both government and social propaganda to. The most frightening and startling bit of information is when you find out who owns the news networks that we watch as our sources of information.

What’s even scarier is approving that propaganda for wars be used within the United States through the National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 in which enables the United states government to distribute pro American propaganda within our own country. In prior years it was legal and acceptable to do so to rally other countries to get into the American spirit of thinking. Now it will be used on us. You know what this means? Uncle Sam’s propaganda will be on your social networks, televisions and be brought into your home in ways you can’t even fathom. You know the trippy part about it all? Most of the American public doesn’t even know the background or the history of why the Act is coming about. Furthermore, most wouldn’t care if they did know.

If you’ve picked up a magazine recently, tried to look at non-biased news (which is an oxymoron I know), or spent thirty minutes watching television without a political attack ad you’d know the current state that America is in pertaining to propaganda which has clearly in the past (World War 1 &2) led to the brainwashing of American citizens. But who cares right? We’re in a stupor anyway, and most seem comfortable there! I fear for this generation of desensitized hermit-like children that are coming up. I really do because I don't see the generations prior to them questioning much of what is going on.
